AUTOMOTIVE SPRING TEST SYSTEMS
Automotive spring test systems are specialized testing machines used to evaluate the load capacity, stiffness, deformation, fatigue life, durability, and failure behavior of
springs used in passenger cars, commercial vehicles, trucks, buses, and suspension systems.
These systems are important for verifying that springs meet design requirements, provide consistent vehicle handling, and withstand repeated loading throughout their
service life.
Types of Automotive Spring Test Systems
1. Compression Spring Test System
Tests helical coil springs used in suspension struts, valve mechanisms, and other automotive assemblies.
-
Load versus compression displacement
-
Spring rate (N/mm)
-
Free length and solid height
-
Load at specified working heights
2. Leaf Spring Test System
Used for truck, bus, trailer, and other heavy-vehicle suspension leaf springs.
-
Load–deflection characteristics
-
Static stiffness
-
Fatigue durability
-
Permanent set and damage after cycling
3. Torsion Spring and Torsion Bar Test System
Meaures resistance to rotational deformation in torsion springs and suspension torsion bars.
-
Torque versus angle
-
Torsional stiffness (N·m/degree or N·m/rad)
-
Permanent angular deformation
-
Fatigue under cyclic torque
4. Spring Fatigue and Durability Test System
Applies repeated loading or displacement to simulate suspension operation over many cycles.
-
Fatigue life in cycles
-
Stiffness degradation
-
Crack initiation and fracture
-
Load or displacement stability during cycling
5. Suspension Spring and Assembly Test System
Tests a spring alone or as part of a suspension assembly, sometimes including a damper, spring seat, and top mount.
-
Force–displacement behavior
-
Assembly travel and clearances
-
Spring–damper interaction
-
Durability under representative operating conditions
Main Components of a Spring Test System
| Component | Function |
|---|---|
| Load frame | Supports the test load and reaction forces |
| Actuator or crosshead | Applies compression, tension, or cyclic displacement |
| Load cell | Measures applied force in N or kN |
| Displacement sensor | Measures spring deformation in mm |
| Spring platens or fixtures | Position and support the spring |
| Servo-hydraulic or electromechanical drive | Controls movement and loading |
| Controller and software | Defines test profiles, records data, and detects failure |
| Safety enclosure | Protects operators from spring release or fracture |
For high-cycle fatigue testing, the machine may also include temperature monitoring, cooling, vibration monitoring, and automatic shutdown when a failure is detected.
How the Tests Work
The spring is compressed in controlled increments. Force is recorded at each displacement, allowing the engineer to determine its stiffness and load at specified working
heights.
The machine repeatedly compresses and releases the spring between specified load or displacement limits. The test continues to a defined cycle count or until a failure criterion is reached.
The spring is loaded according to a defined procedure, unloaded, and measured again. The change in its free length or other specified dimension indicates permanent deformation.
Standards Commonly Relevant to Spring Testing
| Standard | Application |
|---|---|
| ISO 22705-1:2021 | Measurement and testing of cold-formed helical compression springs; dynamic testing is excluded.
ISO
|
| EN 13906-1 | Design and calculation of cylindrical helical compression springs made from round wire |
| EN 13906-2 | Design and calculation of cylindrical helical extension springs |
| EN 13906-3 | Design and calculation of cylindrical helical torsion springs |
| SAE J1574/1 | Measurement of vehicle and suspension parameters, including suspension elastic and friction characteristics; not a general-purpose spring fatigue test standard. |
*** Important: Spring design standards do not automatically define the acceptance limits for every automotive spring.
The component drawing, OEM requirements, and approved test procedure determine the required force, displacement, cycle count, and pass/fail criteria.
